Internship at Janchor (9-16 August 2022)
In 2025 Gen Z will be 30% of the workforce, finally experiencing what it will be like was a surreal experience. I had the privilege to be an intern at Janchor. Janchor hedge fund based in Hong Kong. Going to ‘work’ every morning in exchange square and having a desk in the center of the office hearing people debating, consistent clicking, and overall an office environment was all new to me. For the week or so days I was tasked to create a survey comparing different generations. With this broad task I began researching facts about different generations to help me think of my thesis question. After a day and a half of researching my brother and I came up with my thesis question which was ‘how do Gen Z research and purchase products differently?’ As my generation is the first generation to grow up into a world in which we have full access to the internet and social media. Our ways of communication, self-awareness and research differ completely from previous generations. This is where the question sparked and we wanted to know if due to how fast technology is developing, do the Generations follow? What we are validating is whether the research and purchase process, done by Gen Z is completely different to previous generations. The survey focused on the three first parts of buying a product which are awareness, research and consideration. The reason for focusing on these first 3 steps is because these are all based around consumer research methods and habits .The survey has 5 sections, the first section determines your generation and age. This is followed by the three main sections, Awareness, research and consideration. Lastly a section with two open ended tac-on questions. Our goal was to get at least 10 respondents from each generation as such we sent out the survey to extended family, friends, family and more. In total Gen X had (11) respondents, millennials had (10) respondents, Gen Z had (14) respondents. This was one of our considerations before interpreting the DATA as the respondents are not equally distributed. Our second consideration before interpreting our DATA is that some respondents misinterpreted some of our questions which could have hindered the results, this was mainly with one specific question.
After gathering all the DATA and sorting it which was in an experience itself we had to create a presentation and present it to the whole office in their Monday meeting. In our presentation we presented our DATA, our findings, graphs, tables and more. While presenting I did have some nerves as I am mainly used to presenting in front of my classmates or some teachers and this was a completely different setting, this was in front of people that all have an inquiring mindset who are always striving to learn and find out more about your presentation.
Overall I must say this was an incredible experience everyone welcomed us with open arms. I have gained so much knowledge and understanding on how the ‘outside world’ will be like and I am looking forward to it.
