The highest role as a student in Elsa high school a student can achieve is being house captain, the role of a house captain consists of two members from each of the three houses which then look over the student council, student activities, fundraisers and more. This year I had the honor to be selected as the house captain for ‘Akiva’ (yellow color). To achieve this goal I needed to be interviewed by a senior staff in competition with other students to then be chosen. My role as a school leader was shown throughout the year. From fun activities organized by myself alongside my fellow house captains for the whole school such as, dodgeball, capture the flag, football matches, basketball, house cheers and more to more difficult tasks such as organizing sports day, putting into action what we talk about in our student council meeting such as tuck shop. From this year's journey of being the house captain I learned the skills of management and being able to be on top of my task and relying on myself to not make mistakes as with any mistakes I make it would affect a lot of people including my house. Furthermore I was able to understand the key component responsibility has when dealing with a high position role. Without responsibility and staying on task the structure of house captain would fall, no activities would work, nothing would work. Having responsibility being one of my strengths in my charctater the responsibility of managing activities and events was shown. Although challenging being house captain with all the extra duties and responsibilities I found it a position that I was able to grow and show development in my leadership skills, communications and self esteem. From being insecure about talking in public to the end of the year where talking in front of the whole school felt normal and comfortable. All these skills that I have learned and grown on I will continue to work on as these skills are life skills to make me the best version of myself.
Talent show
I was able to organize the talent show this year for the first time in over two years due to the pandemic. On the 17/11/2022 I sent out a sign up sheet as well as went around the school to sign students up to be participating in the talent show. Furthermore we were able to get a list of fifteen volunteers and four teacher judges. After this we began contemplating the prizes for the winner and settled on 700 hkd for 1 place 500hkd for 2 place and 300 hkd in third place for coupons in MUJI (a bookstore). I went to purchase the gift cards on Friday that will be presented to the winner of the talent show on Tuesday. Now that I had a list of the participants I was able to start setting up for the 20/12/2022 as such I had to plan for what the students wanted and needed. For instance, there were a large number of musicians and singers as such , so I emailed the music teacher for permission to get some music equipment such as instruments and stands for the papers of music. Another thing I needed to do was to access the microphones for planning on how many we need as well as getting batteries for them to be able to hand them out to the judges myself as the MC and the performers. I MC the whole event in pairs with a house captain in grade 10. Following the schedule my job was to call up the performances one by one and set up the stage according to the performance as well as give the judges the mics when they wanted and keep an eye on the timer as we were running on a time limit. Overall it was a fun event and I was able to hype up the students and bring enthusiasm to the crowd which I have been trying to work on as of recently to be able to both build my confidence and to be able to interact with people in a less awkward manner.
Spirit week
Every year we have a week where students can enjoy a week full of fun activities, for this one off I will need to plan the activity such as football, dodgeball, raffles, dress ups and more and send out the notifications to the school to make the students aware of the situation of that weeks events. For this one of my three goals are to organize the events, be able to make an impact on the students to make it fun and lastly to divert to new events that have never been done before at school. On the 21/11/2022 we started planning the events of spirit week today and decided on the dates which will be from the 5 to the 9 of december and started planning on what themes and events we would like to have for the students. Some themes we have thought of are world cup day, decade day, pajamas day and cowboy day. These are just some of our brainstormed ideas and some activities we are thinking of doing are sponge the teacher, football games, volleyball, yukigassen and lastly a general knowledge quiz. 11/12/2022 As spirit week is getting closer and the planning stage is finalizing the planning stage, we have decided to finish the themes of the days and coordinate the activities to the day. There was a big confusing as there were extra activities added to the schedule that were unaware about such as the hanukkah events due to this we changed the dates of the event to start from the 13 of december and end on the 19, the hiking and the design challenge as such I had to adapt and use what I had to squeeze extra activities into the schedule to make it full as well and link the free dress the the according activities. As the start of spirit week we decided that the first day of spirit week will be just normal free dress, furthermore we decided on the first day of spirit week that we will have hanukkah activities and each grade will be able to have a period of time where they will be able to create their own menorah and have snacks with music and the whole school from grade 6-10 will be off timetable.16/12/2022 As a part of spirit week we are doing the design challenge as a part of my job I will be supervising three teams on row 7. Over the past two days I have been able to help with my knowledge of design to help my team develop the best zipline they possibly can with the materials available to them. I also took part in helping with all three mini challenges as well as helping judge in the presentation that each group would be giving as a pitch and I was tasked with grading the pitches with teachers. 19/12/2022 on the last day of spirit week and as such we had the final event which was the final day of the design challenge. As such it was race day as a part of spirit week it was also free dress and even though it was free I still had to help out my team to succeed in the three races. I also had to help out in the last mini challenge and in the races as some teams did not have enough students to fill in for the relay race so I had to sub in. Overall it was an enjoyable spirit week and it seemed to be a comfortable event for both students and teachers to be in free dress with daily activities. Overall I was able to learn ways that I must adapt to changes as the plan that I had was changed due to different scheduling which made me have to adapt.
